North Shore Picks of the Weekend, May 20-22

Posted on May 20, 2011

This weekend, I have chosen my own book-author event as a “pick” for the weekend.  I hope you’ll come, and I hope you’ll agree with me that it’s a fun way to spend a Saturday.  I love reading aloud.

There’s much more going on this weekend, too.  Read on.

BOOK-AUTHOR NIGHT WITH JANE WARD, Jabberwocky Bookshop, Newburyport

Come hear me read from The Mosaic Artist on Saturday, May 21 at 7 pm at Jabberwocky Bookshop.  Seriously, come if you can.  It’s my biggest fear prior to every event I do that no one will show up.  Me and a bunch of empty chairs, egads!  I’m known to bring baked goods to these readings.  (No, I’m not above food bribes.)  If I don’t know you, please stop by the table after the reading and introduce yourself.

AMESBURY FIRST, 2nd ANNUAL SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL, downtown Amesbury

On Saturday May 21, travel to downtown Amesbury for the 2nd Annual Amesbury First Sustainability Festival.  Events are happening all over downtown between 10 am and 4 pm, with some businesses offering discounts and special events that showcase sustainability.  The festival calls attention to the town’s 10 percent Shift Program – an initiative that asks residents to shift 10 percent of their purchases to local businesses.  Live music and entertainment is scheduled for the amphitheater in the Upper Millyard, and street vendors will fill Market Square.

8th ANNUAL NEWBURYPORT CHOCOLATE TOUR, downtown Newburyport

Between 1 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, May 21, several retailers in downtown Newburyport are slated to take part in the Red Cross-sponsored Chocolate Tour, a sweet way to raise funds for local disaster relief efforts.  Show an admission program book at a participating shop and receive a free sample of chocolate.  Program books may be purchased in advance for $15 at The Ruby Slipper in the Tannery, First National Bank of Ipswich on State Street, and Body Sense on State Street.   Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the event at the Unitarian Church Hall on Pleasant Street.  Participating retail shops are listed in the programs.

NEWBURYPORT FARMERS’ MARKET, The Tannery Parking Lot, Newburyport

Week 4.  Fresh produce is here, local goodies, live music, and lots of fun!

Join the vendors and market organizers from 9 am to 1 pm this Sunday, May 22 at the Newburyport Farmers’ Market.  Come for the fresh food and stay for the music of Fiddlin’ Bill. Stroll the stalls, grab your treats, then settle in to listen to the great music and visit with friends and neighbors.
